The talk of … you know the rest.

I liked Finnieston before it was cool.

OK, so admittely that’s not entirely accurate. I did live there, though. In fact, this was the first part of town I ever lived in – for a whole four weeks, back in 2001.

Things were different then. For starters, I’d barely discovered coffee. And as for the area … Run-down would probably be overly kind. There was approximately one newsagent, a cash machine that charged the earth to use it, and that was just about it.

Flash forward to now and I can’t think of many areas of the city that have change as much. Finnieston now is practically unrecognisable – a run of bars, restaurants and fun places. And now, thanks to The Steamie, great coffee has arrived in the area too.

This isn’t a big place – four small tables and a few seats in the window – and the first time I turned up it was a struggle to even get in, which I took as a good sign. The decor is a mishmash of coffee-related paraphernalia and old furniture – I really love its look.

Having managed to squeeze myself in I got a cracking flat white made with Artisan Road-provided beans – I had to overlook the tempting selection of cakes but it was a trial to do so. The coffee itself was really tasty and smooth, with the beans being ground on demand.

At £2.30 it’s good value too and for the non-coffee-drinking friends (we all have them!) a good variety of teas and hot chocolates (I’m told good things about the white rose and vanilla). There’s no wifi but the tables don’t really lend themselves to using this as an office-away-from-the-office anyway – this is most definitely just a great place to hang out and chill out.

So squeeze in to The Steamie the next time you’re in Glasgow’s coolest neck of the woods. You won’t be disappointed.
